Why Are There Unmonetized Streams in Your Royalty Statement?

Not all streams or views that include your music generate revenue. Here’s why some may be listed as unmonetized in your royalty reports:

  1. Trial Period Streams
If a track is streamed by a user in a free trial phase—such as on Deezer—it's often not paid as a royalty-earning stream.

  2. Ad-Free Plays
On platforms that rely on ad revenue (like YouTube), if a video plays without an ad being served, it may not generate income—even if your track is present.

  3. Creation-Based, Not View-Based Royalties (TikTok)
TikTok pays based on how many videos use your music, not on how many views those videos get. So a popular video with many views may still result in no royalties if too few pieces of content are created using your track.

Quick Summary Table

Scenario

Reason for No Royalties

Stream during trial subscription

Free trials are usually not royalty-eligible

Ad not served during view

Plays without ads often don’t generate revenue

TikTok video views without music reuse

Royalties are based on creations, not view count

What You Can Do

  • Understand that not all streams generate revenue, even when exposure is high.

  • For TikTok, focus on encouraging content creation using your track—not just views.
